Silky Project

Preserving Malpelo's Marine Treasures

Our Mission and Vision

Committed to Marine Conservation
At Biodiversity Conservation Colombia, we are passionate about safeguarding the unique biodiversity of the Sanctuary of Fauna and Flora Malpelo, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Our Silky Project, launched in 2016, is all about protecting the rich marine life of Malpelo, fighting against illegal fishing, and promoting sustainable conservation practices. With constant vigilance, innovative methods, and strong partnerships, we aim to ensure the long-term preservation of this vital ecosystem for future generations.

About Malpelo

About Malpelo Importance to the Ecosystem

Malpelo Island is an ecological crown jewel within the Eastern Tropical Pacific, playing an indispensable role in maintaining the balance and health of marine ecosystems. Located 490 kilometers off the coast of Colombia, this remote volcanic rock island spans approximately 35 square kilometers of marine protected area. As one of the largest and most significant no-fishing zones in the world, Malpelo serves as a sanctuary for numerous threatened and endangered marine species, including Scalloped Hammerheads and Silky Sharks. Protecting Malpelo ensures the survival of these species, which are crucial for the health of global marine ecosystems.

Unique Features and Biodiversity

Malpelo Island is renowned for its extraordinary marine biodiversity and unique geological features. The island’s underwater landscape, influenced by the nutrient-rich Humboldt Current and upwellings of plankton, supports large populations of marine life. It is one of the few places in the world where divers can witness massive aggregations of hammerhead sharks and silky sharks. These unique features make Malpelo a critical area for marine research and conservation, offering invaluable insights into the natural behaviors and habitats of various marine species.

Why Protect Malpelo?

Malpelo Island’s ecological significance and unique biodiversity make its protection imperative. Here are the key reasons why Malpelo needs to be safeguarded:

Biodiversity Hotspot

Malpelo is home to an astonishing variety of marine life, including numerous threatened and endangered species. Its waters support large populations of sharks, such as the Scalloped Hammerhead and Silky Shark, as well as whale sharks, giant groupers, and billfish. Protecting Malpelo ensures the survival of these species, which are integral to the health of global marine ecosystems.

Critical Breeding Grounds

The island's surrounding waters serve as essential breeding grounds for many marine species. By providing a safe haven free from fishing pressures, Malpelo allows these species to reproduce and thrive, contributing to the replenishment of marine populations.

Unique Geological Features

Malpelo's underwater landscape, shaped by volcanic activity and influenced by the nutrient-rich Humboldt Current, creates an environment that supports high biodiversity and biomass. This unique setting offers invaluable opportunities for scientific research and conservation efforts.

Threats and Conservation Impact

Malpelo faces significant threats from illegal fishing, pollution, and climate change. Protecting Malpelo has a far-reaching impact on global marine conservation. The island's role as a no-fishing zone and sanctuary for endangered species helps maintain the ecological balance of the Eastern Tropical Pacific and contributes to the overall health of the world's oceans. By safeguarding Malpelo, we set a precedent for marine conservation efforts worldwide, demonstrating the importance and effectiveness of protecting vital ecosystems.

Our Activities

Our main focus is to protect the island and its surrounding waters, serving as the first line of defense against threats to its unique ecosystem. Here are the key activities we undertake:

Surveillance and Monitoring

We maintain a constant presence in the sanctuary, using advanced monitoring systems to detect and deter illegal fishing activities. Our vigilant surveillance ensures that the protected waters of Malpelo remain a safe haven for marine life.

Anti-Poaching Operations

Our teams actively pursue and intercept illegal fishermen, seizing fishing gear and freeing trapped marine wildlife. These anti-poaching efforts are crucial in preventing the destruction of Malpelo's delicate ecosystem and maintaining its biodiversity.

Scientific Support

We provide a platform for scientists to conduct essential research, contributing valuable data to the global understanding of marine ecosystems.

Marine Debris Removal

Our dedicated teams regularly conduct clean-up operations, removing significant amounts of marine debris, including plastic bottles, straws, fishing gear, and other pollutants. This results in a cleaner, healthier environment for marine life.

Educational Outreach

Through our global media resource and educational programs, we raise international awareness about the importance of preserving Malpelo and its unique ecosystem. Our efforts inspire social and political change, driving stronger protections for marine environments.

Our Impact

At Biodiversity Conservation Colombia, we have observed a substantial increase in the population of key marine species since the inception of our project in 2016. Our continuous surveillance and anti-poaching efforts have allowed species like the Scalloped Hammerhead and Silky Shark to thrive in their natural habitat. By maintaining a constant presence in the sanctuary we have safeguarded critical breeding grounds and habitats, ensuring the survival of numerous threatened and endangered species. Our dedicated efforts in marine wildlife conservation have created a more balanced and thriving ecosystem in Malpelo.
